The dynamism of creativity

When I approach an empty canvas, I may have a specific intention I wish to articulate from an original tiny sketch, or if I find that my initial idea does not translate well at the bigger scale then I let the painting take on a life of its own. This is the exciting part of abstraction when your paint and materials demand a solution from your subconscious.

I believe abstract painting to be an emotional, organic process. To that end, I will use any brush, tool or implement I deem necessary to reveal the “true” nature of that specific artwork. I may need to add more paint and material to the composition or I might remove pigment already committed to the canvas. My painting process exists to serve the end goal, the creation of dynamic abstract Irish artwork.

I originally qualified as an Architect but grew frustrated that it took two to three years to get my designs built. I quelled this impatience when I channelled my creativity into painting, specifically through the medium of acrylic. The rapid drying nature of acrylic paint, injected urgency and dynamism into my painting process. Painting in acrylic is rather like recording a song but only having the time for just one take. I like the fast results it produces.
